Galion and Bucyrus Community Hospital Emergency Teams are able to work doctor-to-doctor with OhioHealth Stroke Specialists in real time, making crucial diagnostic decisions and mapping an appropriate care plan. This type of care is possible by the use of advanced telemedicine technology now at both Galion and Bucyrus Community Hospitals. Should a patient require a more advanced level of care, such as neurovascular intervention, OhioHealth will arrange a transfer of a patient to one of its Primary Stroke Centers in Columbus and provide guidance and direction to caregivers and family members. This partnership gives patients access to one of the largest neuroscience programs in the nation, including Riverside Methodist Hospital, which is the largest hospital provider of inpatient stroke treatment in Ohio.

Stroke Network Avita

EXPERT EVALUATION

An Emergency Department physician at GCH/BCH activates the Stroke Network technology. OhioHealth’s eICU® nurses respond to the alert and link the ED physician to an on-call neurologist at one of their Columbus hospitals.

DIAGNOSIS

Initial tests are run. Using REACH Health™ web-based telemedicine technology, the OhioHealth neurologist assesses the CAT scan, the patient and consults with the ED doctor and patient’s family.

ABOUT REACH Health™

This telemedicine technology utilizes a mobile cart equipped with two-way, high-definition webcam and audio capability directly connects BCH/GCH with a neurologist in Columbus. This direct-communications technology is designed to help maximize efficiency, while minimizing the need to send patients elsewhere for specialized care unless they absolutely need it.

PLAN OF CARE

A decision is made whether to have the patient remain at his or her local hospital or to start the patient on tPA (an order written by the OhioHealth neurologist) and transfer him or her to an OhioHealth Primary Stroke Center.
